The first indicator that your dog isn’t listening or doesn't respect you as the leader is the way they behave in the house.

Signs that they DO respect you and listen to you:
Respects your space
Sleeps in their beds when told
Never shoves or trips you up, respects thresholds and waits for your commands
Calm when guests arrive,
Focusing only on you, focusing on you when on walks

Signs that they DO NOT respect you or the house:
Ignore their name and your commands
Lay on sofas and beds without permission
Barge past you out the door and in the house
Bark when you stop petting, demand attention, barking or pushing against you
Jump on your guests, do not listen to you, ignoring you
Always in your personal space
Jump and scratch your doors
Chew sofas, shoes and socks
If the second list applies to you, you need to start investing in your dog’s training, to improve both your quality of life and theirs.
How to encourage your dog to listen to you?
Dogs look to you for direction throughout the day. This requires you to be consistent
in command words, in rules & boundaries. It is important that everyone in the family knows them and follows through too. Dogs look to you for leadership, not only does it make them feel safe, but it will improve relationships and obedience. Otherwise
they will act out any anxiety they feel, as they are not clear as to their role/position in
the home and problems will occur such as listed above.
However, we all lead very busy complex lives. Often juggling many commitments,
deadlines and can feel overwhelmed ourselves. Then on top of that the dog needs
feeding, walking and training. Yes a dog needs continual training in short bursts to
maintain its recall, obedience and home manners.
